In general, the cotyledons are used for storage of compounds (for example of starch) providing energy for germination. Therefore they are of different shape compared to the other leaves of the plant and are lost early during development. The angiosperms can be subdivided into plants forming on cotyledon (monocotyledons) and plants forming two cotyledons (dicotyledons).
