In general, the stem axis grows above ground, in an upright position (exceptions are for example rootstocks or some stem tubers). The stem axis is segmented in internodes and nodes, the insertion sites of lateral shoots and leaves. The part of the stem axis between the main root and the first node (carrying the cotyledons) is called hypokotyl.
