Subdivision of the seed plants, characterized by ovules not enclosed within an ovary.

Gymnosperms were the dominating plants on earth during the mesozoic period. Their importance has decreased since the evolution of angiosperms about 110 million years ago. Today only about 700 species are growing, known examples are fir, spruce or pine from the pinaceae.
