Pinaceae

This plant family originated about 65 million years ago at the turn from the cretaceous to the tertiary period in the temperate zones.

Members of the pinaceae (about 200, spruce (Picea abies) shown here, pine (Pinus silvestris), fir (Abies alba) for example) are populating large areas, in particular in the (northern) taiga.
