Electrons are located in the external part of atoms. The structure of this sheath determines the interactions of atoms, their chemical characteristics.

In the range of atomic constituents, the laws of classical physics loose their validity and are replaced by the laws of quantum mechanics. These laws predict a more or less complicated arrangements of electrons in a given atom, as given (as a rough approximation) for some of the electrons of the noble gas neon.
