Thallus

Multicellular structures of algae, mosses and fruiting bodies of fungi.

Thalli have evolved by adapting to the life in water. Organisms consisting of respective structures rarely can cope with dryness. Cells and tissues of the vascular plants, which are adapted to life on the main land are more differentiated (see cormus) when compared to thalli. The most important examples for thalli are filamentous thalli, plectenchyma and tissue thalli.
