Elongation zone

Newly formed root tissue from the meristem is elongating itself in a certain distance from the meristem.

Plant cells are growing by the uptake of large amounts of water into their vacuoles until the vacuoles make up a large part of the cell volume. In plant roots, this process starts shortly behind the region of cell division (meristem). Further along the root, cells start to differentiate forming the final root tissues.
