The class of mammals already originated in the beginning of the mesozoic period (during the triassic period). The animals diversified much later, however, in the tertiary period, after the dinosaurs had become extinct.

Particular characteristic features of mammals are hairs on their skin and the nutrition of young animals by milk glands. Closely related groups of the modern mammals are the monotremes (platypus and echidna) and the marsupials.
