Quaternary period

Part of the caenozoic period starting 1.6 million years ago and lasting until today. (Due to its short duration, the period is almost unrecognizable in the figure.)

During the tertiary period, global climate had cooled and precipitations had decreased. This trend resulted in a succession of climatic changes (ice ages and atlantica), which are dominating the quaternary period until today. During these climatic oscillations, modern humans evolved.
