Adaptation of organisms to their environment by random changing of heritable properties and preferred reproduction of the most adapted organisms.

This definition was coined in 1859 by Charles Darwin. The "random changing of heritable properties" is caused by random changes of DNA sequences (mutations). In turn, the evolution of organisms can be analyzed by comparing the DNA-sequences of the various groups of organisms.
