Chitin

Long, chain-like molecules formed by the connection of nitrogen containing carbohydrate units.

Chitin is the main constituent of fungal cell walls and of the exosceleton of insects, spiders and crustacea. In contrast to cellulose, the main constituent of plant cell walls, the C2 of the glucose units is N-acetylated (marked in red colour).
