Magnoliopsida (Dicotyledons)

One of the three big classes of the subdivision of angiosperms.

This relatively old group contains about 8 000 species. The second class of dicotyledons, the rosopsida, is considerably larger (180 000 species). Known examples are magnolia, tulip tree, nutmeg, sweet laurel, camphor-tree, cinnamon tree, avocado tree, pepper, and lotus flower. The picture showing a flower of sweet laurel is taken from "Koehler´s Medizinalpflanzen" from 1898.
