Mantle of the earth

The mantle consists of more or less viscous material and extends from the crust (which is 5-70 kilometres thick) to a depth of about 2800 kilometres. Slow convection currents are transporting the internal heat to the outside and are driving the continental drift. Independently from these currents, hot magma is dwelling up to the surface in certain regions resulting in the formation of hotspot volcanoes.
