Autotroph organisms cover their needs in energy and organic nutrients from non-biological sources.

The most important source of energy and organic nutrients for autotroph organisms is photosynthesis. Autotroph photosynthetic plants and bacteria provide the basis for the nutrition of almost all other (heterotrophic) organisms.
