Photosynthesis

Production of carbohydrates from atmospheric carbon dioxide using the energy of light.

The energy stored during photosynthesis in the form of carbohydrates is the basis for the existens of almost all organisms on our planet. Chloroplasts of plants and some photosynthetic bacteria are responsible for this process.

In photosynthesis, water is cleaved into oxygen and reduction equivalens using the energy of light. A part of the energy of light is additionally conserved in the form of ATP. In a second step, this ATP and the reduction equivalents are used to produce glucose by the reduction of carbon dioxide.
