Cells of epidermatic tissues are supported by a basal membrane. The upper part of the cells can be forming various structures. Epithelia of bronchioles for example are carrying cilia (as shown in the figure), epithelia of insect skin are producing layers of chitin. In glands, epithelial cells are producing a large variety of secreted compounds.
