Humid, mild winters and warm, dry summers favour the development of drought resistant, evergreen forests.

Many sclerophyll forests, in particular in the mediterranean region have been severely damaged by long-term human influence (deforestation). The respective stands are often no longer populated by sclerophyll forests, but by mediterranean hard scrub (substitute associations).
