Osmosis

Equilibration of concentration differences by diffusion of the respective solvent (water) resulting in changes of volume or pressure in the solutions in question.

In contrast to many other, larger molecules (orange), water (blue) can cross most biological membranes. Therefore, different concentrations on two sides of a biological membrane often are equilibrated by the migration of water molecules. This migration finally leads to changes in volume (as in the example) or pressure in both solutions.
