Electrophoresis

Method for the separation of electrically charged molecules.

Charged molecules (ions) are wandering in an electrical field versus the electrodes with the opposite charge. The speed of this movement depends on charge, mass and the form of the molecules. As shown here, different molecules will move with different speed after starting electrophoresis; this way, they can be separated from each other. In biochemistry, such methods are used for the examination and purification of large molecules (DNA, RNA, proteins).
