Gentian family, Gentianaceae

This family covers mostly herbaceous plants, amongst them centaury (Centaurium) and gentian (Gentiana, Gentianella). Due to their bitter ingredients, many of these plants are used as bitter principles e.g. for the preparation of liquors. The figure shows flowers of the willow gentian (Gentiana asclepiadea).
