Raised bogs

High peat layers prevent the plants in high bogs from reaching nutrient-rich telluric water. The plants have only access to nutrient-poor rain water. These conditions are only tolerated by plants specifically adapted. Because most raised bogs have become farm land in central europe, many of these plants are endangered. The figures shows the peat layers from a raised bog in the Harz mountains.
