The continental climate of temperate zones is characterized by little rainfall, by large differences of summer and winter temperatures, and by short periods between these seasons. Due to the shielding effect of the norwegian mountains, this type of climate dominates large parts of scandinavia. In the other parts of europe, the western winds causing oceanic climate are reaching further inland.
