The pericarp is formed by the wall of the ovary (marked in green colour), the seeds are formed by the ovules (marked in brown colour).
In the case of most one-seeded nuts, the pericarp becomes hard and dry (hazelnuts). Flowers with several carpels are producing nutlets (crowfoot, cinquefoil). One-seeded berries are forming soft and pulpy pericarps. (grapevine, cucumber, pumpkin). Stone fruits are forming pericarps with a soft, pulpy outer layer and a hard inner layer (cherries, walnuts).
